I first read Lois Lowry’s The Giver in my 7th grade English class, and it has remained one of my favorite required readings from grade school. In redesigning chapters 12-13, I wanted the copy to be centered and have a rigid structure to represent our protagonist’s society. The photography follows his journey as he learns and sees color for the first time, transitioning from pure black and white, to spots of red, and eventually to full color. These photos, along with the pull quotes and annotations, break up the structure of the text. As told in the story, the color red is used as a recurring motif in this book's design.

The assignment also called for the physical production of the publication as a printed, hardcover book using the case binding method. I acquired red endpapers with pressed leaves to follow the text’s motifs of color and nature.
